How switchable cooler/freezer units can help retailers manage seasonal demand
Help your retail customers adapt to changing seasonal demand. See how switchable cooler/freezer units can provide more flexibility from the same display space.

Your retail customer may need more frozen display space for ice cream during warm weather, more chilled capacity for Christmas party food and a different mix for a promotion.
Buying a dedicated cabinet for every peak or fluctuation can leave equipment underused once demand changes. A switchable cooler/freezer allows the same unit to support chilled or frozen ranges at different times of the year.
As their refrigeration supplier, you can help them decide whether that flexibility would provide more value than another single-purpose cabinet.
With more than 40 years’ experience in the commercial refrigeration sector, TEFCOLD supplies switchable units in a range of formats and capacities, backed by service and spare parts support. Here’s how these units can help your customers manage seasonal demand – and what to check before recommending one.
What is a switchable cooler/freezer?
A switchable cooler/freezer can operate in either chilled or frozen mode within its stated temperature ranges.
The retailer empties the unit, changes its setting and allows it to reach the new temperature before reloading it. You can learn more about this principle in our introduction to the EIB cooler/freezer range.
Switchable refrigeration is most useful when your customer’s demand for chilled and frozen products peaks at different times.

Use switchable refrigeration for seasonal product ranges
At different times of the year, the same switchable cabinet could hold:
- Ice cream and frozen desserts during warm weather
- Chilled drinks, salads and meal-deal products
- Frozen turkeys, desserts and party food before Christmas
- Chilled meat, dairy and prepared food
- Limited-edition products and promotional lines
- Everyday chilled or frozen stock between campaigns
This allows the retailer to give more space to whichever category needs it. It can also help them test a new chilled or frozen range before investing in dedicated equipment. However, if the retailer’s peaks overlap, they may still need separate cabinets.
Respond to promotions and changing demand
Seasonal demand doesn’t always follow the calendar. Warm weather (such as our recent heatwaves), a supplier promotion or a new product launch can change the required product mix.
An impulse cooler/freezer gives your customer a way to respond. For example, the EIB-D1010-B1 can operate between -18 °C and 5 °C giving you access to both freezing and cooling options dependant on the products you wish to sell.
The shop can present the products thanks to glass sides, sliding lids and interior lighting. It also comes with braked castors. The EIB range comes in three sizes, helping you match the cabinet to your customer’s available space and expected stock volume.
Retailers can also use our refrigeration branding service to turn the cabinet into part of a product campaign.
Increase display capacity without using more floor space
Switchable units can also form part of a larger retail layout. The SFI switchable supermarket cooler/freezer provides a glass-lidded lower display. Optional multiplexing kits allow retailers to combine compatible units into an island.
Retailers can also combine a compatible, size-matched SFI cabinet with an MTF top-section freezer/chiller. The MTF sits above the lower cabinet, adding shelved display capacity without taking up more floor space. As each cabinet is switchable, the retailer can set the upper and lower displays to suit its product mix.
You’ll need to confirm cabinet compatibility, dimensions, access and installation requirements. MTF units require stand assembly and lifting, so make sure your customers plan for delivery and installation.

What should you check before recommending a switchable cooler/freezer?
Ask your customer the following questions:
- When do their chilled and frozen sales peak?
- Do those peaks overlap?
- Which products will they store and what temperatures do they require?
- How much storage capacity and display area do they need?
- Does the proposed location meet the model’s ambient temperature and ventilation requirements?
- Where will the stock go during a changeover?
You should then compare the cabinet’s temperature range, climate class, cooling system, dimensions, energy consumption and installation requirements. Our commercial freezer selection guide covers more of the factors to discuss with your customers.
Plan the change between cooler and freezer modes
Your customer will need suitable temporary storage during each changeover. They should remove the existing stock, clean the cabinet and follow the manufacturer’s instructions before selecting the new mode.
They’ll then need to let the cabinet stabilise at the required temperature before reloading it. Ensure they plan the changeover so that it doesn’t create extra work during a busy trading period.
